This is a quick read, however it took some adjusting to with part of the story told as a fairy tale. It does take you into Russia during the war and really expose you to what they went through.
Meredith and Nina Whitson grow up surrounded by their fathers apple orchids. Their mother is very cold and aloof from them and very loving toward their father. Nothing the girls do pleases her. They finally quit trying. They grow up and Nina becomes a world traveling photographer while Meredith marries her childhood sweetheart and they have 2 daughters. And, her marriage is falling apart. Meredith takes over the running of her fathers orchid. Their father suffers a heart attack and Nina comes home. He makes the girls promise him to have their mother tell them the whole fairy tale and to get to know her. This is not easy. Nina goes back to work and Meredith is swamped with taking care of the business, her home and her mother. Their mother is Russian but they know little else about her. They finally convince her to tell the fairy tale, never dreaming that it would take them on a journey or what those memories will tell.
